Genelec Installation Loudspeakers Chosen for Pub and
Live Music Destination The Burren in Somerville, MA

— Authenticity is order of the day at this destination for those who love to perform Irish music and those who love to listen to it, and the transparency of Genelec 4030C installation speakers assures that the heart and soul of the music played there is always front and center —

NATICK, MA, October 2, 2019— Since opening in January 1996, The Burren has built a reputation for serving up a truly authentic and complete Irish experience. Named after a region of County Clare in the southwest of Ireland, where the village of Doolin is a renowned center for traditional Irish music, The Burren’s menu offerings of Guinness beef stew, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips, and vegetarian/vegan options, and bar taps featuring the best of Irish stout (including, of course, Guinness) assure you’d never know you’re just steps from the heart of Davis Square in the Boston suburb of Somerville, just a short walk to Tufts University, and not in Galway.

But what seals the deal is the music. The stage in the back of the restaurant brings in local, national and international acts playing everything from bluegrass, Americana, world music and jazz to rock, pop, indie, classical, children’s shows and everything in between. But it’s The Burren’s front room and bar where you’d swear you were in Ireland. The music in that large yet intimate space is Irish through and through, played round a table in the traditional Irish seisiún format. It’s the jewel of the venue, attracting authentic Irish performers from far and wide, including owner and musician Tommy McCarthy, who performs there with his wife and partner Louise Costello. They’re among the numerous artists who appear on The Burren Backroom Series of recordings, done in collaboration with local public radio station WGBH, and an outgrowth of A Celtic Sojourn, a weekly radio program that features traditional and contemporary music from around Ireland and the rest of the Celtic world. McCarthy embodies both Ireland’s musical aesthetic and its entrepreneurial spirit that’s so deeply entwined with America itself. As one regular musician describes The Burren: “There are no televisions in there — it’s a place to go and connect with the music.”

But it took a speaker from Finland to really bring out the beauty of The Burren’s front-room sessions. Earlier this year, 11 Genelec 4030C self-powered loudspeakers were installed in the space. They’re positioned nine feet apart along the walls leading to the performance area. The 4030C’s Phoenix connectors made it a snap to string the speakers together, and the self-powered speakers are also a perfect fit with a dbx Driverack ZonePRO controller. (It’s located near the center of the room, so those working the bar can easily keep tabs on the room’s volume.) And Genelec’s Intelligent Signal Sensing ISS circuitry is a boon for a venue like The Burren, automatically turning the system off when not in use, saving electricity and expense.

McCarthy says the systems installers were well acquainted with Genelec speakers, part of what led him to buy them. “They know what they’re using in other clubs and what sounds and looks good, and they recommended we go with the Genelec 4030 speakers,” he says, noting that other leading Irish music venues have also chosen Genelec. They include the Swift Hibernian Lounge in New York’s East Village neighborhood. Brendan Quirke, part of The Burren’s management team, notes that the 4030s’ sound is seamless in the room. “The coverage is such that as you move through the room you never get the sense that you’re moving from speaker to speaker — instead, it’s one consistent, continuous listening experience wherever you are in the room. And the sound, the clarity, is incredible, night and day from what had been there before, filling the room but at a level that still lets conversations happen.”

McCarthy agrees, noting not only that he heard the difference immediately but that the musicians who perform there hear it, too. “They love these speakers and they let me know that,” he says. “We had Brian O’Hanlon come up from Nashville, and he was raving about how good they sound. It took us a while to get round to putting in new speakers, but with the Genelecs, it was worth waiting for.”

Genelec, the pioneer in Active Monitoring technology, is celebrating over 40 years of designing and manufacturing active loudspeakers for true and accurate sound reproduction. Genelec is credited with promoting the concept of active transducer technology. Since its inception in 1978, Genelec has concentrated its efforts and resources into creating active monitors with unparalleled sonic integrity. The result is an active speaker system that has earned global acclaim for its accurate imaging, extremely high acoustic output from small enclosures, true high-fidelity with low distortion, and deep, rich bass.

Genelec is also celebrating over 10 years of its Smart Active Monitoring™ technology, which allows studio monitors to be networked, configured and calibrated for the user’s specific acoustic environment. Each Smart Active Monitor or subwoofer is equipped with advanced internal DSP circuitry, which tightly integrates with the GLM (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager) software application, running on Mac or PC. GLM’s reference microphone kit allows the user’s acoustic environment to be analyzed, after which GLM’s AutoCal feature optimizes each Smart Active Monitor for level, distance delay, subwoofer crossover phase and room response equalization, with the option of further fine tuning by the user. By minimizing the room’s influence on the sound, Smart Active Monitors deliver an unrivalled reference, with excellent translation between rooms.
