Violet Audio dMix 128 wins over JR Everhart in challenging real-world live sound test for third dMix 128 mixing system

— Veteran production company owner and Grumpy Sound Guy host JR Everhart puts his third dMix 128 through its paces on a full-band show in one of the Baltimore market’s most demanding live rooms —

Los Angeles, CA, October 19, 2026 – After months of using Violet Audio’s dMix 128 digital mixing platform for shows, veteran live sound engineer and CLP Audio & Staging owner JR Everhart recently got the opportunity he had been waiting for: putting the mixer to work on a demanding show in a room he knows well.

The test came at Cancun Cantina in Hanover, Maryland, a high-energy live music venue outside Baltimore that Everhart describes as historically one of the most challenging rooms in his market to mix. While the venue had recently upgraded its PA system, because of the layout of the stage and position of FOH, the venue still presented the kind of variables that can quickly expose the strengths and weaknesses of a mixing platform.

Everhart brought his third dMix 128-based fly rig into the hall for a performance by longtime client Shake the Room, a high-energy party band delivering rock-driven takes on hits from the 90s and 2000s, alongside classic favorites spanning rock, pop and country. It was the first live gig for that dMix 128 system, and “I was amazed by how quickly everything came together,” said Everhart. “The system sounded fuller and warmer, and I was able to get the mix where I wanted it very quickly. Soundcheck was essentially done within minutes. I actually had the band keep playing because I thought, ‘It can’t be this easy, I must be missing something.’”

Everhart had been using the dMix 128 since early 2026 and had already used the platform for smaller live events, corporate applications, DJ reinforcement and other production work. The Cancun Cantina date, however, gave him an opportunity to evaluate his third system purchased under the more demanding conditions of a full-band performance in a room where he had considerable previous experience.

That history provided a particularly useful point of comparison. Using the dMix 128’s matrix processing, Everhart was able to address differences between the left and right sides of the installed PA independently, while the platform’s EQ, compression and processing allowed him to further shape the system for the room. Once the PA was balanced, he found that the dMix 128 gave him the control he needed to build the mix quickly and maintain it throughout the show.

“What really stood out was the quality of the processing,” Everhart said. “The dMix 128’s EQs are extremely responsive, and the compressors are warm and smooth. They don’t feel mechanical. I could control the areas of the mix that needed attention without taking the life out of it, so the show could be loud and dynamic without becoming harsh or fatiguing.”

That became especially apparent as the night progressed. Everhart ran the system at substantial levels while maintaining vocal clarity and overall balance, with no recurring feedback issues during the performance. He specifically credited the dMix 128’s dynamics processing with helping control problematic midrange frequencies while allowing the mix to remain open and musical.

“For me, that’s one of the biggest differences,” he added. “You can get the energy and impact you want without the mix becoming painful. The processing is doing its job, but you’re not hearing it work. The mix stays smooth and breathes naturally.”

Everhart was equally impressed by how the dMix 128 compared with consoles and processing systems he has used throughout his career. “I haven’t mixed on a system that let me do all of that this well in a long time,” he said. “It reminded me of working behind some of the big British analog consoles and higher-end touring desks I used earlier in my career. You have the tools you need, they respond the way you expect them to, and you can concentrate on the mix rather than fighting the equipment.”

For Everhart, whose CLP Audio & Staging handles live entertainment, corporate events, festivals and installed sound projects, the experience was significant because it moved the dMix 128 beyond specifications and controlled evaluation into the environment that matters most to a working engineer: an actual show.

“JR’s experience demonstrates what dMix 128 brings to a challenging gig: responsive EQ, smooth dynamics and the processing flexibility to quickly get a room immediately under control. We’re exceptionally pleased JR chose his third dMix 128 unit for CLP Audio’s expanding requirements. It is a real testament to their satisfaction with the dMix 128 mixing platform,” said Phil Wagner, President and CEO, Violet Audio US.

“The real test of any mixer is what happens when you take it into a room, put a band through it and have to deliver,” Everhart concluded. “This was a room I expected to fight all night, and instead I had a great time mixing. The dMix 128 made what I thought was going to be a very challenging gig a complete joy. I walked away looking forward to mixing there again, and I can honestly say I’ve never felt that way about that room before.”
