Recording Academy™ Producers & Engineers Wing® "On the Move" in 2018
Santa Monica, Calif. (October 11, 2018) — The Recording Academy™ Producers & Engineers Wing® continues to serve the industry by educating about best practices and highlighting achievements of those who labor behind the scenes to create music. The P&E Wing provides a forum where all recording professionals – producers, engineers and studio personnel, retailers, manufacturers, and educators – can work together to preserve and grow their industry.
HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE YEAR INCLUDE:
CES Hi-Res Music Pavilion in Las Vegas: Six P&E Wing members participated in the Stream the Studio exhibit showcasing Hi-Res music: Chuck Ainlay, Ed Cherney, Richard Furch, Dave O’Donnell, Greg Penny and Ryan Ulyate, with numerous other P&E Wing members also featured via video. Points of interest at the Pavilion included Hi-Res streaming on LG and Sony phones and an automotive premium music system experience from Ford/Lincoln.
GRAMMY Week® P&E Wing 11th Annual Celebration Honoring Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz. This event was held for the first time in New York City, on Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, at Rockefeller Center's iconic Rainbow Room, reprising what has become a highly anticipated event that marks the official start of GRAMMY® Week. The gathering recognized Alicia Keys and Kasseem Dean, aka Swizz Beatz, for their commitment to creative and sonic excellence and their ongoing support for the art and craft of recorded music.
P&E Wing events around the country with its various Chapters this year included Up Close & Personal with Beck in Atlanta, and the New Orleans Studio Summit with Don Was and other special guests. This year also marked the launch of a new Academy program titled "Craft Sessions," which included events in Philadelphia with engineer/studio owner Ann Mincieli, in Nashville with artist/producer Linda Perry, in New York with St. Vincent, and "Demystifying Mastering" in Houston Texas. Numerous other events highlighted the accomplishments of women in audio with engineers and producers Kesha Lee, Susan Rogers, Trak Girl, Marcella Araica, and Piper Payne.The Wing also launched a new education initiative focused on best technical practices for music recording. Based on the Wing's published set of Guidelines and Recommendations for the production and delivery of recorded music projects, the initiative launched in Los Angeles in June with local recording education programs and is now expanding nationwide with updated versions of the Recommendations in partnership with the Recording Academy's 11 other Chapters and their Producers & Engineers Wing committees.
On September 18, the Recording Academy overall celebrated the results of its continued advocacy work with the Senate passage of the Music Modernization Act, which updates copyright protections to include all creators and helps ensure that the music industry remains a viable option for the next generation. Of particular interest to the P&E Wing and its 6400 members is that, when signed and finalized into law on October 11, this act provides, for the first time in history, copyright protection to producers and engineers.
