Amplified Wax Upgrades Its PhantomFocus™ PFM HD-1000 Monitor System

– Spokane, Washington recording studio Amplified Wax, famous for its live band tracking and mixing, takes a sonic leap forward by implementing the muscular PFS System-Two subwoofers to its PFM HD-1000 Monitors. –

– Savvy studio owners who do their homework realize quickly the profound impact installing a PFS HD-1000 Monitor System can have on their business. In this case, a trip to Nashville to experience a PhantomFocus System at one of Carl Tatz Design's TEC Award-winning PhantomFocus MixRooms was all it took for studio owner Jimmy Hill to visualize Amplified Wax's sonic future. –

Nashville, TN: Engineer/producer Jimmy Hill and business partner and wife Mandy Hill – the proprietors of recording studio Amplified Wax in Spokane, WA – recently decided to enhance their already acclaimed Carl Tatz Design (CTD) PhantomFocus™ PFM HD-1000 Monitor System Four by upgrading to a PFM System Two, which features a pair of custom-programmed SVS SB16-Ultra subwoofers – 1500 Watts, with 16" drivers and unprecedented 8" voice coils. The PFS System Two renders the benchmark for low-end muscle and arresting detail and can do so in even very large rooms.

“It’s one thing to hear a track, make adjustments, and try to provide a balanced mix to the artist. It is, however, quite another thing to be enveloped in the sound, allowing the creative ear to distinguish all the subtle nuances of the artistic performance bringing out the emotional intent of the piece,” comments Amplified Wax’s owner/engineer/producer Jimmy Hill.

Hill continues, “The effect of mixing on the PFM HD-1000s, now in a PFS System Two, brings forth a moving experience for our clients which has more than once been accompanied by tearing eyes. Never has this happened prior to installing this invaluable system. Thank you, Carl, for changing my entire career for the better.”

About the PhantomFocus™ System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ System monitor tuning protocol offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest. All speakers interact with the room they’re in, and the PhantomFocus System allows any monitors to perform at maximum accuracy - in any room - with a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response and pinpoint imaging in what some owners have described as a “holographic sweet spot.” It is a new level of sonic accuracy that engenders easier, better and faster mixing that translates well in any environment.

There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.

Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane™ and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer.

Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus System, you can’t go back.
