ERIK ZOBLER AND GEORGE DUKE CHOOSE KORG MR SERIES
MR-2000S DSD RECORDER

 — Keyboard great George Duke and long-time engineer Erik Zobler choose the
Korg MR-2000S Studio Recorder for printing high-resolution digital masters —

127th AES CONVENTION, NEW YORK, NY, October 9, 2009 — GRAMMY® winning engineer Erik Zobler first teamed up with musician George Duke thirty years ago for the latter’s Brazilian Love Affair album. Both men are known for their critical, demanding ears, so Korg was honored when Zobler recently added the MR-2000S DSD 1-bit Studio Recorder to the gear setup at Duke’s Studio. As Zobler notes, “I have always liked the DSD format. Even the early versions of DSD sounded more ‘analog-y,’ if you will. Since I normally work ‘outside the box,’ summing in the analog world, I am always on the lookout for the best device to capture the sound coming off the mixer. I must say that the Korg MR-2000S is the closest sound to the console that I have come across to date.”

To reach this conclusion, Zobler set up a “blindfold test” for Duke: five different audio paths of all the available tools in their studio were created, so that George could switch from one to another with the touch of a button as the song played. Erik’s instructions to George were simple: “Pick the one you like.”

Zobler explains the process, “I listened to them all and then I brought George in. I put them all on buttons and I didn’t tell him what was what. He knew which one was the console — that one he knew. Everything else was blind for him.”

Duke chose the Korg MR-2000S, as had Zobler. “You want to get your recording medium as close to the console as possible. George and I both picked the Korg MR-2000S and we have incorporated it into our workflow.”
