HOWARD SCHWARTZ RECORDING NEW YORK (hsr/ny) INSTALLS THREE GENELEC SE™ DSP 5.1 SURROUND MONITORING SYSTEMS

— The systems include the Genelec Loudspeaker management SE™ software featuring AutoCal, creating an objective, precise mixing environment —

NAB SHOW, LAS VEGAS, NV, April 14, 2008 — Howard Schwartz Recording New York (hsr/ny), a full-service audio post-production facility located in the heart of Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal area, has been on the cutting edge of professional audio technology since it opened its doors in 1975. And it is staying on that cutting edge, thanks to the installation in March 2008 of three Genelec DSP Monitoring Systems. The systems were installed in hsr/ny’s Studio West, Studio 12 and Studio 14. HSR purchased two Genelec SE™ (Small Environments) DSP Monitoring Systems, each consisting of five 8130A digital monitors and the new SE7261A 10 inch DSP subwoofer, as well as a third system employing five 8240A bi-amplified monitors and the SE7261A subwoofer. The SE DSP System is specifically designed to solve many of the acoustic problems associated with small recording and mixing environments. All three systems come with Genelec’s AutoCal™ GLM.SE™ (Genelec Loudspeaker Manager) software, which provides a familiar graphic interface to help speed users through system setup and complete acoustic calibration.

“The timing of these new monitoring systems from Genelec was perfect,” says Marty Newman, Vice President and Chief Engineer at hsr/ny. “We were preparing to move forward with a facility-wide upgrade – new Pro Tools HD systems, new servers and more – and we saw the DSP SE system at Genelec’s booth at AES. We listened to them and realized they fit our needs for a compact, accurate and tunable near-field 5.1 monitoring solution.” The new Genelec DSP monitors are used mainly on broadcast commercial spots, an area for which HSR is highly renowned (the studio’s mixers have won numerous EMMY® Awards for their television work), but Newman is confident in the products’ ample versatility. “They can do anything,” says Newman, speaking of both the mixers and the Genelec monitors. “We’ve had substantially increased demand coming in from our clients for 5.1 mixes for television shows and commercials, so it’s important to be able to monitor accurately at the kind of levels we use with television. The DSP package is perfect for that.”

The Genelec DSP system comes with software control linked with the SE7261A DSP subwoofer, which provides all the necessary network connections to the host computer and supplies extensive DSP resources through its high-pass AES digital outputs to the 8130A’s. However, hsr/ny opted to use Genelec’s new AD9200A eight-channel analog to digital converter as an interface to monitor in analog. And Newman says the GLM made both the installation and the use of the Genelec DSP system “absolutely seamless. The problem with near-field 5.1 monitoring has always been that you have someone tune the environment and then when it comes to reconfigure the room because of new gear coming in, we have to have the room tuned again. At about $1,000 a pop, it gets costly. Plus, third party room tuning is not necessarily an objective proposition – it’s based on how one individual perceives it at a given time. What the GLM system has done is taken the subjectivity out of the process of room tuning. It takes care of the level, the EQ, even the phase on the subwoofer, which is important in a room where nodes can cause low-frequency build-up. And we can store and save all of these settings. So we’re getting great sound and great performance.”

Genelec, the pioneer in Active Monitoring technology, is celebrating 30 years of designing and manufacturing active loudspeakers for true and accurate sound reproduction. Genelec is credited with promoting the concept of active transducer technology, which many manufacturers are just now incorporating into their products. Since its inception in 1978, Genelec has concentrated its efforts and resources into creating active monitors with unparalleled sonic integrity. The result is an active speaker system that has earned global acclaim for its accurate imaging, extremely high acoustic output from small enclosures, true high-fidelity with low distortion, and deep, rich bass.
