THE FENNIA PRIZE 2009 GRAND PRIX AWARDED TO GENELEC
— Genelec’s 5040A Active Subwoofer selected for top design
NATICK, MA, February 23, 2008 — The winners
of the Finland-based Fennia Prize 2009 design competition have been
announced. The Fennia Prize 2009 Grand Prix goes to Genelec, for the
design of its 5040A Active Subwoofer. In addition to high standards
in design, evaluation criteria included usability, environmental and
social responsibility and impact on business. As the Grand Prix winner,
Genelec has been selected to participate in the Fennia Prize exhibition,
February 20 – March 29, 2009, in Helsinki.
The Genelec 5040A active subwoofer was designed by industrial
designer Harri Koskinen for Genelec, a trailblazing company in active
monitoring technology. The compact design of this product differs from
that of more conventional subwoofer solutions, and the inner workings
of the subwoofer represent state-of-the-art technology. Among other
features, the speaker driver and controls are placed out of sight on
the base of the device, and the overall form is simplified and unassuming.
The enclosure is made with a new manufacturing method employing deep-drawn
steel and die-cast aluminum. The same form is repeated in miniature
in the remote volume control unit.
Held biennially, The Fennia Prize – Good Design
Grows Global is a design competition for businesses, open to firms and
companies making designed products or using design in other ways. The
awards of the competition are the Fennia Prize Grand Prix, individual
Fennia Prizes and Fennia Prize Honorary Mentions. Prize winners are
entitled to participate in the Fennia Prize exhibition and its tour,
and they are included in the exhibition catalogue. The competition is
organized by Design Forum Finland.

About the Genelec 5040A Active Subwoofer:
Genelec’s award-winning 5040A represents the cutting edge in subwoofer
technology and design for use with computer sound systems, workstations
and other close-proximity listening applications requiring a low-profile
monitoring solution. Designed in conjunction with its sister product,
Genelec’s 6010A Bi-Amplified Active Monitors, the 5040A extends
LF response down to 35 Hz with amazing bass articulation. The playback
level for the whole system is conveniently controlled by remote volume
control provided with the 5040A subwoofer. With five main input/output
channels and a dedicated LFE channel with 35/120 Hz reproduction bandwidth
selection, the 6010A/5040A system fulfills the needs of 5.1 productions.
Like all Genelec active subwoofers, the 5040A also features extremely
About the Genelec 6010A Bi-Amplified Active Monitors:
Genelec’s 6010A Bi-Amplified Active Monitor system, designed for
use with Genelec’s award-winning 5040A Active Subwoofer in close
proximity home and professional listening applications, is the company’s
smallest speaker/monitor system to date, measuring 7 1/8" x 4 3/4"
x 4 1/2" (height with Iso-Pod™ 7 11/16"). It can even
be plugged directly into personal music players for enhanced acoustic
enjoyment. However, size is no handicap to performance as the 6010A
two-way active monitoring system incorporates Genelec’s acoustic
design innovations to minimize all forms of distortion. Designed as
an active loudspeaker, the 6010A contains proprietary drivers, advanced
power amplifiers perfectly matched to the drivers, active crossover
filters and protection circuitry. The 6010A has a die-cast all-aluminum
Minimum Diffraction Enclosure™ (MDE™), which features large
internal volumes, softly curved edges and outstanding mechanical strength.
As a result, the imaging accuracy and low frequency extension from such
a compact enclosure is truly astounding. The 6010A also incorporates
Genelec’s advanced Directivity Control Waveguide™ (DCW™),
which provides an amazingly smooth on- and off-axis response, while
the long, curved reflex port ends in a wide flare for excellent bass

Genelec, the pioneer in Active Monitoring technology,
is celebrating 30 years of designing and manufacturing active loudspeakers
for true and accurate sound reproduction. Genelec is credited with promoting
the concept of active transducer technology, which many manufacturers
are just now incorporating into their products. Since its inception
in 1978, Genelec has concentrated its efforts and resources into creating
active monitors with unparalleled sonic integrity. The result is an
active speaker system that has earned global acclaim for its accurate
imaging, extremely high acoustic output from small enclosures, true
high-fidelity with low distortion, and deep, rich bass.
