CEDIA EXPO, ATLANTA, GA, September 10, 2009
— Every challenge has a solution, and very often, when it comes to
audio for upscale home theaters, the answer is Genelec Custom
Installation Systems. That’s a conclusion David Frangioni, Founder and
CEO of Audio One Sound & Video, one of the country’s leading
design/build firms of exquisite home theaters and media rooms, has
repeatedly come to. Any one of the many demanding applications
regularly tackled by Audio One (with offices in Miami, Nashville,
Boston and Los Angeles) illustrates how time and again, Frangioni and
Audio One have found the answers they need with speakers from Genelec
Custom Installation Systems, and one recent installation is
particularly notable.
A large home theater in a massive
30,000-square-foot residence in the Miami area, featuring a Runco
projector and a centrally located movie server with five terabytes of
movies, presented an interesting situation: a client who demanded the
absolute best in audio quality, however in what Frangioni describes as
an “atypical space,” one that did not allow for placement of speakers
above or to the side of the screen stage. A systems designer might
typically turn to a perforated screen solution, placing the L-C-R array
behind the screen, but due to the presence of an adjacent room behind
the screen wall, even behind-the-screen placement of the speakers
wasn’t feasible.
What did work, however, was an L-C-R array consisting of two Genelec
HT312B Three-Way Active Loudspeakers flanking a dedicated Genelec
HT324AC Three-Way Active Loudspeaker
for the center channel. These were able to be positioned beneath the
screen stage, enabling a sound system design that provided the powerful
projection that Frangioni sought while being positioned to accommodate
the theater’s configuration. The system was rounded out with four
Genelec
AIW26 Active In-Wall Loudspeakers used for the side and rear positioned of the 7.1 surround system, and two Genelec
HTS3B Active Subwoofers.
“For
starters, the sound quality of all of the speakers is awesome,” says
Frangioni, who has used Genelec speakers in home theater applications
as well as professional recording studios he’s designed and built for
clients including Steven Tyler and Ozzy Osbourne.
Well beyond
the great sound quality, Genelec’s patented Directivity Control
Waveguide™ (DCW™) technology enabled optimal dispersion of the speakers
for perfect balance, despite their less-than-optimal positioning.
Genelec’s revolutionary DCW technology is designed to match the
frequency response and directivity characteristics of the drivers in
the loudspeaker. This results in an excellent flatness of the overall
frequency response for on and off-axis listening positions (reducing
the reflected sound energy at the listening position), as well as
improved stereo and sound stage imaging.
“What you can
accomplish with Genelec’s Waveguide technology, in terms of imaging and
frequency balancing to match any acoustical environment, is just
amazing,” he says. “As a result, you never have to compromise to the
performance of the speaker.” The project went on to win a CEDIA®’s Best
Integrated Home – Gold Technical Design award in the
$1,000,001-to-3,000,000-plus category.
Speakers from Genelec
Custom Installation Systems will continue to be the answer for
challenging home theater design and installation situations. “The
versatility of the Genelec range of speakers gives me lots of options,”
Frangioni says. “And they also give me and my clients great sound. As
an engineer, I’ve recorded hundreds of records and I have high
standards. Genelec speakers meet those expectations, in the home
theater and in the studio.”

the pioneer in Active Monitoring technology, is celebrating over 30
years of designing and manufacturing active loudspeakers for true and
accurate sound reproduction. Genelec is credited with promoting the
concept of active transducer technology, which many manufacturers are
just now incorporating into their products. Since its inception in
1978, Genelec has concentrated its efforts and resources into creating
active monitors with unparalleled sonic integrity. The result is an
active Custom Installation speaker system that has earned global
acclaim for its accurate imaging, extremely high acoustic output from
small enclosures, true high-fidelity with low distortion, and deep,
rich bass.
