STUDIO B. CELEBRATES THIRD ANNIVERSARY WITH MONTH-LONG EVENT AND EXHIBITION, ROCK, PAPER, DIGITAL

— Subtitled “the b. turns 3,” the Rock, Paper, Digital event will feature the works of dozens of world-class artists, including influential filmmaker Shannon Plumb and a groundbreaking exhibit, Light Impressions: A Celebration of iPhone® Photography with iPhoneographers from around the globe —

ALYS BEACH, FLORIDA, June 6, 2011Studio b., located in Alys Beach, Florida, officially kicks off its third anniversary celebration on June 11, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. with the unveiling of the new exhibition series Rock, Paper, Digital … the b. turns 3. Conceived as a showcase of the entire range of artistic work, from primitive methods and mediums through the most contemporary, Rock, Paper, Digital will feature works of fine art from the best of the best in well-known and up-and-coming artisans and artists from around the world. Included are everything from encaustic paintings, photography, figure drawing and recycled art to paper couture, iPhoneography, video art and more. The exhibition will be on display through July 10, 2011, and will be open for viewing Thursdays through Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Special evening exhibition events are scheduled; check the studio b. web site for info on special evening events and chats with the artists.

Among the dozens of artists and works featured, a centerpiece of Rock, Paper, Digital is the special exhibit Light Impressions: A Celebration of iPhone® Photography, created by studio b. founder/owner and world-renowned photographer Colleen Duffley and co-organized by Jill Gaupin, a South Walton-based iPhone photographer. The two have curated photography from many of the most recognized names in the emerging movement from around the world, including Greg Schmigel (Annapolis, MD), Star Rush (Seattle, WA), Elena Herrero (Barcelona, Spain), Nacho Cordova (Salem, OR), Chun Tong Chung (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Marty Yawnick (Fort Worth, TX), Jaime Ferreyros (Key Biscayne, FL) and many more.  A comprehensive list of participating artists can be found online at www.studiobthebeach.com. Light Impressions was conceived out of Colleen and Jill’s shared enthusiasm for iPhone photography and the belief that this new photographic medium positions everyone with a desire to express their creativity on a level playing field. Indeed, most of the photographers featured in Light Impressions are not professional photographers.

Another highlight of Rock, Paper, Digital is the work of Brooklyn, New York-based filmmaker Shannon Plumb. Plumb creates dialogue-free, performance-based films that are insightful meditations on the act of personification. Her cinematic studies of life's various roles and characters explore the complexities embedded in the ordinary and extraordinary. From the humble persona of a new mother to iconic figures from the silver screen, Plumb portrays these characters with zest and humor. Inspired by the curious spirit of slapstick comedy and the physical humor of silent film legends such as Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, Plumb employs a low-fi aesthetic by using Super-8 film, stationary camera shots, long takes and hand-made props and costumes. Plumb is a one-woman show starring as all characters and acting as the creative force behind her films. The DIY production of the films and her elastic expressiveness as an actress add to the charm of her work and push it beyond its obvious predecessors and influences. Her works have been featured around the world within solo exhibitions, group exhibitions and selected screenings. As well, Plumb has received press for her work in world-renowned publications such as The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Time Out New York, The New Yorker and The Los Angeles Times.

“As studio b. celebrates our third anniversary, it is fitting that we feature works from the oldest art forms to the newest,” states Duffley. “Encaustic paintings, cyanotype, 8-millimeter film, iPhone photography and more – it will be a stunning range of mediums, approaches and emotions. We are especially proud of the iPhone photography exhibit Light Impressions. This is truly a groundbreaking showcase, as never before has iPhone photography been exhibited on this scale and with this level of deference. We have also invited several artists who make creative works out of paper, including amazing paper clothing and jewelry – stunning pieces. There are also collaborations with different artists working together in two mediums to create a unique piece together, for example fashion designers working with artists to create a unique piece of clothing. In other words, Rock, Paper, Digital will be full of surprises for all in attendance, and I cannot think of a better way to mark studio b.’s third anniversary. I look forward to everybody attending and celebrating with us.”
