FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Build a Bamboo Bike at studio b.

— Brooklyn- and San Francisco-based Bamboo Bike Studio teams with studio b., located on the Florida panhandle, for series of hands-on workshops —

ALYS BEACH, FLORIDA, October 4, 2011The Bamboo Bike Studio, a leading innovator hosting workshops on the development of green, sustainable, stylish bicycles, with offices based in Brooklyn and San Francisco, is on the road for the first time, and the team is bringing its bike-building workshop to studio b. in Alys Beach, Florida, along scenic route 30A on the Gulf of Mexico. Participating attendees can build a bamboo bike at sessions taking place from October 6-8. The bikes and the workshop itself will be featured in an upcoming story in studio b.’s publication, Salon b. (The International Magazine of All Things Creative). The events will also host an auction of one of the bikes, with proceeds going to The Artful Living Foundation. Studio b. founder Colleen Duffley is planning on making this a regular event series, with another visit from The Bamboo Bike Studio coming in spring 2012. This week’s sessions are sponsored by Santa Rosa Beach, Florida’s First Note Music Hall.

Attendees will learn how to build a bike from scratch out of bamboo trees supplied by the Bamboo Bike Studio. Co-founder and lead designer Justin Aguinaldo, who has been described as someone who “thinks like J.P. Morgan crossed with Mother Teresa,” will share his enormous bike knowledge and experiences as a New York City bike messenger. Co-founder Marty Odlin, the Bike Studio’s design and engineering guru, has a motto: “If I can do it, you can do it.” In addition to the Bamboo Bike Studio, Odlin has been actively involved in the Bamboo Bike Project, a project by scientists and engineers at The Earth Institute, Columbia University, which aims to examine the feasibility of implementing bicycles made of bamboo as a sustainable form of transportation in Africa.

Bamboo Bike Studio strives to use the most high tech performance materials and processes possible. Both the Brooklyn team and the San Francisco team judge their success on functionality, environmental impact and economic feasibility. The Bike Studio aims to educate on the appeal of bike building and to make bike building more accessible through workshops – like the one at studio b. – and outreach programs offered at schools and to the general public. Additionally, The Bike Studio is an active participant in an inaugural bike building and education program in Ghana.

Both a fine art gallery and a performance/workshop space, studio b. hosts the best of the best at its Alys Beach, Florida location through fine art and photography exhibits, film previews and hands-on workshops. Previous events have included everything from encaustic art techniques to making Mozzarella cheese or an authentic Moroccan meal with some of the nation’s top chefs. In addition, studio b. organizes unique travel experiences and is listed in the national registry of open figure drawing studios for its weekly open studio.

Duffley states, “As part of our ongoing commitment to providing unique creative and culturally-enriching experiences, studio b. is proud to host The Bamboo Bike Studio series of workshops. As ‘simple’ as these events sound, they in fact combine so many approaches that we hold dear at studio b.: an innovative spirit, a do-it-yourself attitude, awareness of the environment and global issues, a spirit of camaraderie, and undeniable style. We look forward to hosting these events, and I am sure it will be a great success.”
