MELVILLE, NY, October 26, 2010 — Korg USA and the USC Thornton School of Music recently kicked off the new USC Thornton/Korg Artist Series of clinic events for the school’s music students. The inaugural appearance was by guitarist Joe Satriani. The series is designed to give students “front row” access to today’s influential music makers, who impart both practical and inspirational advice and insight about having a successful music career. On September 24, VOX and Korg artist Joe Satriani participated in the inaugural clinic, which took place at the Johnny Carson soundstage on USC’s University Park campus. Over 120 students from the USC Studio/ Jazz Guitar and Popular Music Performance programs attended.
The event format could be described as a hybrid of VH1’s Storytellers and Bravo’s Inside the Actors Studio. Satriani started off by performing four of his most well known pieces, and before playing each one, he told a story of its background and origins. After he finished performing, he was joined onstage by Chris Sampson, Associate Dean for the Thornton School’s Popular Music Performance program, for the interview portion of the clinic. Chris emphasized the do-it-yourself aspects of Satriani’s career, and Satriani touched on his early breaks in the industry, how he continues to keep his balanced schedule, and how “Summer Song” became a hit due to its placement in Sony TV advertisements
The clinic ended with a Q&A, during which the students asked Satriani questions regarding his composition, inspiration, habits and rituals. Toward the end of the Q&A, Joe’s longtime manager Mick Brigden came on stage to participate in the session, giving students further insight into the artist management side of Satriani’s career. Future sessions are scheduled with artists from a variety of genres over the current school year.
“The first clinic was a success on all fronts,” stated Korg USA President Joseph Castronovo “Korg USA’s mission has always included the creation and support of new music makers. This series is a way to develop future generations of musicians by exposing them to world-class Korg and VOX artists who can speak about the real-world music business. We look forward to future sessions of this ongoing series and are proud to have such a strong partner in Chris Sampson and USC.”
Korg USA and the USC Thornton School of Music established a relationship last year when the school launched its Bachelor of Music degree program in Popular Music Performance program and Korg USA equipped the practice rooms with a backline of Korg and VOX products.
