MARANTZ PROFESSIONAL PMD660 COMPACT DIGITAL RECORDER GOES “FLYING WITH BETTY”

— The leading professional digital audio recorder gives wings to
flight attendant Betty's airborne podcast, "Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase,” which has so far landed her a publishing deal and national magazine interviews —

NAB SHOW, LAS VEGAS, NV, April 16, 2007 — Over 115,000 frequent and not so frequent fliers have become fans of "Betty in the Sky with a Suitcase” (flywithbetty.com), the only podcast that regularly originates from 30,000 feet. “Flight Attendant Betty” is a very real flight attendant, for a major U.S. airline (she keeps her last name and the airline’s name confidential), who records her podcast while flying across the U.S., capturing the kind of comical events that can only take place in the fast-paced world of air travel. Pilots, other flight attendants and passengers have all been chronicled on her podcast, which has attracted the attention of major magazines such as Travel + Leisure and most recently have garnered Betty a book deal. Other than her laptop, the single most important piece of equipment that powers Betty’s airborne audio blog is the PMD660 Compact Digital Recorder from Marantz Professional.

Flight Attendant Betty started her podcasting career when a pilot who had his own podcast asked her to “guest” on his show. “He had done all the research and figured out all the stuff you need to do a podcast, so I just took notes and went out and got the same things,” says Betty. One of those items was the PMD660, and within minutes Betty was flying high, able to record clear, high-quality digital audio even surrounded by the noise of an airliner traveling at 500 miles per hour. “I’m totally not tech-savvy,” she notes. “So the fact that the PMD660 is so easy to use makes it the perfect tool for anyone doing podcasts. I plug in the microphone and go. If the noise is a little too much, I turn up the gain.”

Betty’s career as a budding author was helped by her podcasting. “I was told I needed a lawyer and an agent, which like podcasting once was out of my comfort zone,” she continues. “But on one flight I was sitting across from man and I asked him if he was a lawyer. It turns out he was the next best thing — an author! He took me through my book contract line by line. The PMD660 is like that: it was the one piece of equipment other than a laptop that I needed to get my podcasting going, and it was there just when I needed it.”

The “hand-held” PMD660 Solid State Recorder features portable, battery-powered operation. It offers a choice of recording uncompressed WAV files at 44.1 or 48 kHz, as well as 64 kbps mono or 128 kbps stereo in MP3 format. An optional 1 GB flash card holds over an hour of stereo or 3 hours mono of uncompressed audio (recording at the rates specified above), while the unit itself can operate for up to 4 hours running on 4 standard AA batteries. Furthermore, the PMD660 has built-in stereo microphones, XLR connectors with +48V phantom power, and is compatible with an optional RC600 wired remote that attaches to most any microphone to supply Record/Pause control, track marking and peak metering from the mic position.
