Carl Tatz NAMM Wrap-Up 2019

– Lectures and panel participation at the 2019 NAMM Show, plus a whirlwind tour of Los Angeles' finest, offers up a full plate of activities for TEC Award-winning studio designer and leading monitoring expert Carl Tatz –

– NAMM conventions are a great place to meet up with colleagues and clients, and in Carl Tatz's case, inform and teach both those new to the pro audio world and seasoned professionals how they can greatly up their control room monitoring. –

Nashville, TN: TEC Award-Winning studio designer and leading expert on studio monitoring Carl Tatz of Carl Tatz Design® LLC began his 2019 NAMM lecture series “Secrets of Near-Field Monitoring” by hosting five users of the multi-award-winning PhantomFocus™ System from across the country singing its praises during the two-day lecture event.

In attendance were leading members of the professional audio community and clients of Carl Tatz Design, including Mark Abrams from Vaughan Music Studios, Columbus, OH; Bob Bullock of Cool Springs Mix, Nashville, TN; Richard Furch of mixHaus Studios, Los Angeles, CA; Jimmy Hill of Amplified Wax, Spokane, WA; and Mike Kolar from Soundscape Studios, Chicago, IL.

Robb Wenner, head of Marketing and Artist Relations for Auralex® Acoustics, preceded the Tatz lecture presenting an informative companion tutorial on control room acoustic treatments while displaying the Auralex® Pro MAX Studio 6 and Stand-Mounted LENRD Bass Trap portable acoustic modules.

After completing several sessions at AES@NAMM, Tatz also participated in a panel discussion moderated by award-winning journalist Dan Daley titled “Home (Studio) is Where the Hits Are” as part of the NAMM TEC Tracks program. Studio designers Eddie Veale and Steven Klein joined in the conversation.

Post-NAMM show, Tatz visited multi-award-winning engineer Dave Pensado at his studio in Los Angeles and snapped a shot alongside Dave at his Carl Tatz Edition™ Argosy Dual 15 Console with Dave sitting in his PhantomFocus eChair™.

After swinging by Capitol Studios and getting a personal tour from legendary VP and studio manager (and fellow Rhode Islander) Paula Salvatore, Tatz moved on to Laurel Canyon and Warren Huart’s studio, where he was invited to be interviewed as part of Huart's TEC Award-Winning “Produce Like a Pro” blog. About the PhantomFocus™ System
Carl Tatz Design’s proprietary PhantomFocus™ System monitor tuning protocol offers clients a unique opportunity to have a truly world-class monitoring experience in their room, no matter how modest. All speakers interact with the room they’re in, and the PhantomFocus System allows any monitors to perform at maximum accuracy - in any room - with a full 20Hz-to-20KHz frequency response and pinpoint imaging in what some owners have described as a “holographic sweet spot.” It is a new level of sonic accuracy that engenders easier, better and faster mixing that translates well in any environment.

There are approximately fifty steps in the proprietary PhantomFocus System implementation protocol, including phase alignment, system damping, speaker decoupling and isolation mounting, careful assessment of engineer/speaker placement relative to primary axial room modes, proprietary laser-calibrated speaker distancing and angle alignments, digitally-controlled crossover points and slopes for pass filtering, and, proprietary, multiband parametric equalization.

Hardware solutions can include monitor stands, concrete, Sorbothane™ and other isolation and damping materials, custom floating plenum mounts, subwoofer systems and custom digital processors. The PhantomFocus System evaluation and implementation is a full two-day process and can be applied to near-fields, mid-fields, and large soffit mounted monitors, regardless of manufacturer.

Carl Tatz Design installs the PhantomFocus System in existing control rooms and in all studios that are designed and built from the ground up by CTD. The result is like the aural equivalent of HD TV. Once you experience a PhantomFocus System, you can’t go back.
