New York, NY, October 7, 2014 — Detailed session information has been announced for the AES137 High Resolution Audio (HRA) program, taking place Friday, October 10, 2014, in Room 304 AB at the 137th Audio Engineering Society Convention (October 9-12, 2014, at the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown Los Angeles). The direct result of a collaborative effort between the Audio Engineering Society (AES) and DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group, the HRA program will include a number of panels and sessions that address the current and future direction of HRA from various perspectives, including content creation, digital distribution, licensing of hi-res music files, archiving, subscription models, marketing/promotion of hi-res music, compatibility of playback devices and more.

These panels and sessions will feature some of the brightest minds in the business as they discuss some of the most current and controversial issues concerning the rapid adoption of high-resolution audio across the industry.

Hi-Res Audio Devices for Every Lifestyle (10:00 am – 10:50 am): Learn more details about the growing number of hi-res compatible devices available today from some of the biggest names in hi-res devices including Astell & Kern, dCS, DTS, Kimber Kable, Meridian, Mytek, and Sony. Subjects will include how to demonstrate hi-res audio at retail; the latest options for enjoying hi-res music on-the-go; and how to educate and engage young music enthusiasts. Moderated by Marc Finer (Digital Entertainment Group), the panel includes Owen Kwon (Astell & Kern), John Quick (dCS Ltd.), Fred Maher (DTS Inc.), Ray Kimber (Kimber Kable), J. Robert (Bob) Stuart (Meridian Audio Ltd.), Michal Jurewicz (Mytek Digital) and Aaron Levine (Sony Electronics).
The New Business of Hi-Res Music (11:30 am – 12:20 pm): Get an inside look at the opportunities and challenges associated with hi-res music from Mark Piibe at Sony Music, Howie Singer at Warner Music, and Jim Belcher at Universal Music. Moderated by Marc Finer. Topics will include licensing hi-res files; the latest distribution partners; ingesting and archiving digital assets; new subscription models; and the best ways to promote hi-res music.
Hi-Res Audio Production Workshop (1:00 pm – 1:50 pm): [co-sponsored by the Recording Academy P&E Wing] Join top producers and engineers as they discuss the music creation process and best practices when recording, mixing and mastering in high resolution. The panel, moderated by Leslie Ann Jones (Skywalker Sound), features Chuck Ainlay (Producer/engineer, METAlliance), John Burk (Concord-Telarc Label Group), Ryan Ulyate (Producer/engineer) and Bob Clearmountain (Producer, engineer and mixer), who will review the key aspects of various audio formats in context with their latest music projects.
High Resolution Audio—Super Session (3:00 pm – 3:50 pm): Meet and mix with some of the brightest minds in the business including Bruce Botnick (Music producer, recording and mastering engineer, VP Content Acquisition for Pono Music), George Massenburg (Producer/engineer/inventor, McGill University), Andrew Scheps (Producer/engineer/mixer) and Bill Schnee (Producer/engineer, Schnee Studio), as they explore a number of the most challenging issues facing the recording industry today concerning the adoption of high resolution audio. The High Resolution Audio program will be a major focus at AES137, part of a long tradition of the AES and its conventions serving as the forum for the discussion and advancement of state-of-the-art audio technologies. For over 65 years, nearly every seminal audio development has been incubated and promoted within the AES community, beginning with stereo LPs in the 1950s and continuing with magnetic tape in the 60s, digital audio and the Compact Disc in the 70s, perceptual coding (e.g. MP3) over the past 25 years, all the way to today’s digital streaming formats. It’s no wonder that the DEG and the AES have decided to partner to bring to AES137 Convention attendees the most current and comprehensive information on the state of High Resolution Audio, which is defined as “lossless audio that is capable of reproducing the full range of sound from recordings that have been mastered from better than CD quality music sources.”
